Why HouseChalk exists
I built the homes.
I made the
mistakes.
More homes than I kept a count of. Lived in, drawn, built, taken back to the studs. HouseChalk is everything I wish I had known before the concrete was poured.

The pattern
Every regret
had the same shape.
It was never the big, obvious calls. It was the small ones: made fast, made tired, made without knowing what they had touched. A switch in the wrong place. An island that ate the walkway. A finish picked the night before a deadline.
You don't feel it until you're living in it.
The small calls add upWhat changed
An engineer sees systems.
A homeowner feels them.
For five years I was one of the top draftsmen at a large firm, drawing the systems most people never see: the wiring, the plumbing, the ductwork behind every wall. For twenty-five more, I built software. That's where I learned to see patterns and find the fix.
So eventually, as the homeowner and not the draftsman, I stopped trusting my memory and started mapping the decisions. Every one, in order, with what it connected to.
The regret stopped. That map became HouseChalk.
Decisions, mappedWho is behind this
Two people. Both sides of the table.
We are Philip and Kendra Jarrell. Between us we have lived in, planned, drawn, built, renovated and maintained more homes and buildings than we kept a count of. Our own and other people's. Not one of them taught us the same lesson twice.

The plans and the consequences
The story above is mine: the drafting board, the job site, and twenty years mapping software systems where one change quietly breaks something three layers down. A house is the same shape of problem. That is why HouseChalk maps consequences instead of listing tasks.

The decisions and the weight of them
I have been on job sites since I was ten, and I have spent my career helping people get clear on what no longer fits before they commit to anything. I know what it is to be the one holding every open question, because I have been her.

Every lesson, hard-won. So yours don't have to be.
What we believe
A calmer way to build.
Four convictions behind every decision HouseChalk maps.
- 01
Decisions before they're urgent
The best time to make a call is long before anyone is waiting on it.
- 02
Calm over hype
Building a home is stressful enough. Your guide shouldn't add to it.
- 03
You shouldn't carry it alone
Every decision held with you, not handed to you.
- 04
Reasons outlast choices
What you decided matters. Why you decided it matters more.
The promise
"I'm not here to replace your builder. I'm here to make sure you never have to say 'I wish we had known.'"
You only build it once.
Let's get it right
the first time.
Clarity before your builder asks for answers
